Healthy Fats Decrease Age Related Macular Degeneration Risk
There has been increasing interest in the role that diet plays in age-related macular degeneration. Recent reports published in an issue of the Archives of Ophthalmology reveal a protective effect for omega-3 fatty, acids, fish, nuts, and olive oil, and an adverse effect for trans fatty acids, on the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration. *
In the first study, Jennifer Tan, MBBS and her colleagues determined that men and women who consumed one serving of fish per week had a 31% lower risk of developing early macular degeneration compared with those who consumed less. Compared with those who consumed nuts less than once per week, those who reported eating 1 to 2 weekly servings had a 35% lower risk of early disease.
In the second article, Elaine Chong, MD, and her associates found that a high intake of trans fats was associated with a significant increase in late macular degeneration. Olive oil emerged as protective against late disease. *
The protective associations were mainly evident in those with a reduced omega-6 to omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid ratio. Diets with higher ratios produce larger quantities of metabolic products that contribute to inflammation, which has been implicated in macular degeneration pathogenesis.
Fish contain more omega-3 fatty acids, so it's possible that fish consumption contributes to antiatherosclerotic effects and antiangiogenesis of the retina.

Ever find it interesting how kids act when they go into a toy store? They see a magical world of exciting games, devices and play gear. There are opportunities everywhere, the shelves are full and it’s all there for the asking! To them, there isn’t a reason not to have what they wish; after all it’s what a toy store is all about. But as a parent, that’s not the same world you see. To you, there is a price tag or a sacrifice to be made for such items. Perhaps it’s even more unrealistic because you have come to ‘learn’ those items are just not meant to be had, that they aren’t meant to be taken off the shelf for anyone who merely asks.
It comes down to a matter of perception. Compared to the following discussion, that may seem a bit glamorous of a comparison. However, the state of health in our country has become nothing short of an enormous tragedy, yet all the while we’re being led to believe that our advancing technologies are a means to overcome disease. Our perception is systematically being filtered, dare I say we are being brainwashed, leading us to think that our health care system is effective at bringing us better health. Changing our perception is the first step in bringing about a change to our health, our children’s health, and the future of our health care system.
It’s not an enjoyable task to discuss the deplorable state of our country’s health any more than it is to watch the stock market these days, but the road to recovery similarly needs to accept a hard dose of reality. Or like our economy, the failing health of this country will continue to spiral beyond control.
The declining state of our health has come about through Western medicine mentality. We are not a society entrenched with principles founded to preserve, nurture and cultivate the precious life forces. Instead we have contrived a system of treatments aimed at an expected cause and effect as if the essence of life is incapable of its own perfection. So subtle are the many facets of our system of care that our ‘perception’ of health has become distorted. It is completely out of line with the realism of what we can and should be doing for ourselves and especially our children. That solution is the concept of wellness, central to the theme of this article.
If you ascribe to media publicity, we are led to believe that illness is a given fact of life that we are destined to encounter. It will rob us of our freedom to enjoy our time and future if we don’t protect ourselves with costly insurance and “early detection” methods driven by a mentality of allopathic (use of medicine remedies) care. Yet as the population is becoming enlightened to the success and better overall approach of natural health, we have adopted the concept of ‘wellness’ as the new model of maintaining and enhancing our health. As if we discovered some profound cure of our own self induced declining health, we now aspire to wellness as an icon of a new era of health philosophy.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all in favor of the ideals of wellness and counseling on natural health principles. What seems odd is that wellness shouldn’t be regarded as a novel concept but instead a principle of our lives, as basic as say, good morals.
People of Eastern health philosophy embrace this as a lifestyle instead of a thing to go out and do. They don’t go in search of a place that treats for wellness or a program or service to sign up for. They understand that the body is a temple, pardon the cliché, and that health is as much a part of their internal being as every thought. We need to embrace an entirely unique (to us) perception of health. Making change won’t come from creating more artificial drugs or providing everyone universal coverage for the same failing care that hasn’t changed the scope of our disease progression for decades. We must accept new principles and ideals that promote the understanding and proliferation of the awesome power and perfection of life forces that we already posses. These fundamentals will not only preserve but will foster more robust health and a fulfilling life.
Our challenge, as daunting as it has become, is to overcome the habits of the modernized, instant gratifying, automated society that has reduced our accountability and obliterated our children’s understanding and attention to health, and more accurately, the core energy of our life. It’s a task that will never be accomplished by the current social order, but only by individual choice to return to an understanding or ‘connection’ with the energy of our make up. The starting point is accepting the problem and wanting to make a change. In simplest terms, it begins at breakfast, lunch and dinner. It includes periods of focused exercise and mobility along with meditation. Even greater gains come with making spiritual connections and methods of energy healing. Fortunately these principles are gaining rapid attention, but for newcomers the real challenge is overcoming the dogma of our Western society lifestyle. Understand that Japan, for instance, has the world’s largest population of centenarians (no those aren’t Battlestar Gallactica fighters; they’re people over 100 years of age!) That will never come about from our ‘eat junk - don’t dare exercise - take the magic drug remedy’ mentality.
A recent experience that I find exemplary occurred last year when I accompanied a friend who ran in a “Race for the Cure” event in Chicago. This program is an awesome example of the dedication of millions to strive for a cure for breast cancer, with millions of dollars in research funding provided from scientific, medical and corporate grants. However the disparaging part of the event was the misrepresented image portrayed for a “cure” of cancer by the nature of the supporting sponsors. Surrounding the staging area at the lakefront park were booths of packaged, processed foods, junk food and potato chip vendors. While some were supposedly more “healthful”, no products available were without poor substances or artificial additives with some known level of health risk. Yet other than bottled water, nowhere was a single provision for essential elements of life and health. There was no source of nutritional supplements, organic food growers, green teas, anti-oxidant products, detoxification systems, fitness center representation, mental or spiritual guides or any other element of restorative health. In essence, a ‘cause’ that most Americans support gallantly, the search for cancer cures, is being supported by factors that are known to perpetuate its course and yet not a single provider of proven anti-cancer mechanisms was present. Although this wasn’t surprising to me, I was curious as to how many others, if any, were aware of the same travesty. Our perception of our health and sustaining the energies of life is changing, although slowly. It’s kept in slow motion by the archaic mentality of a powerful pharmaceutical based, allopathic model of health care. Fortunately more and more individuals are coming to understand that toy on the shelf is really available. That restoring health is there for the asking if you truly want it – don’t be convinced you have to resign to a path of disease and failing cures. It’s up to us to decide if we want to be part of the system that says the world is flat, and continue to expect that a magic drug will come. Or we can decide to connect to the essence and energy of life and choose the means and measures to bring about wellness, not simply as a program at the fitness center, but as a true state of mind. The make up of our being, every being, is part of a greater intelligence which if we choose to connect to it, can profoundly empower not only our well being, but the well being of all.
In a recent article in US News and World Report, Top Hospitals Embrace Alternative Medicine, doctors talk of change but nonetheless with resistance. The article describes a significant trend toward obvious success of Eastern medicine and integrative health principles. People are utilizing methods and embracing a new mentality toward life that is more effective and getting results despite an air of disdain from Western medical doctors. Although she assumes a position in integrative medicine, Dr. Barrie Cassileth states CAM therapies for cancer patients at Memorial Sloan-Kettering "have to be rational, and they have to be evidence-based". Homeopathy is "absurd," she says. "It's like a religion." Nor does she put much faith in energy healing: "Manipulating someone's energy field is nonsense." And while acupuncture is offered at Sloan-Kettering, "we don't do it thinking we're stimulating a vital force—we know we are releasing substances from the brain that make people feel better." In actuality, her interpretation is consistent with the flawed thinking and resistance to the evidence of more successful approaches. I am fortunate to have spent many years as a research scientist, learning the skill of interpretation of data, and understanding what “evidence-based” actually means. I comically refer to Columbus; the world is round but Western medicine continues to insist it is flat no matter how much evidence says otherwise. Some people will continue to look for the edge no matter what.

Recession leads 1 in 3 Smokers
to cut Down or Quit
New research released shows more than one in three (36%) of smokers are thinking about or planning to cut down or quit as a direct result of the economic downturn. The poll also shows that one in ten (9%) will be taking the first step and making a quit attempt.
No Smoking Day President and Dragons' Den star, Duncan Bannatyne, commented on the findings: "Everybody is feeling the pinch during the current recession.
"For smokers, who can spend over $2,500 a year on cigarettes, it's particularly tough, so for those who are ready to quit there has never been a better time."
Women are more likely to cut down or think about giving up (40% compared to 32% of male smokers). The report also found:
Almost three-quarters of smokers would like to quit and No Smoking Day is encouraging them to take the first step today by seeking advice from their local stop smoking service, GP or pharmacist.
Dan Tickle, Chief Executive of the No Smoking Day charity said: "Giving up cigarettes will boost your bank balance - but the health benefits are even greater, including easier breathing, improved fitness and healthier hair, nails and skin. It's a fact that quitters also notice they have more energy after only a matter of days.
"By choosing No Smoking Day to quit, smokers will be joining a million others taking the first step to a healthier - and wealthier life. And you don't have to quit alone. You're four times more likely to succeed if you use a free NHS Stop Smoking Service."
Gemma Bissix, ex-Eastenders star and Dancing on Ice celebrity, who recently stopped smoking with the help of her local NHS Stop Smoking Service and supports No Smoking Day said: "There's only one piece of advice that I'd give to someone who wants to get fit for summer - quit smoking!
Antioxidant-Rich Foods For Beauty
and Vibrant Health
Antioxidant rich food is a subject that has become a hot topic the last few years - and for good reason. We face a daily assault against our immunity which affects our appearance as well as our internal body systems and organs.
And nutrition experts have learned that berries are one of the richest sources of bioflavonoids, antioxidants proven to destroy tissue-damaging free radicals and reinforce the cells that make up blood vessel walls which results in significantly enhanced blood circulation.
Some beauty experts now tout berries among the best antioxidant rich foods and their juice and extract to be so powerful that just one eight ounce glass of pure cranberry juice (or the extract equivalent) daily will diminish cellulite dimples in as little as three weeks.
How do you keep free radicals at bay? By the use of free radical scavengers.
These free radical scavengers occur naturally in the body and neutralize free radicals. Certain enzymes serve this vital function and four important enzymes are superoxide dismutase (SOD), methione reductase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase.
The body normally produces these enzymes but it needs help for full spectrum free radical prevention and damage control. That's where a diet rich in antioxidants is vital. These antioxidants are also scavengers, gobbling up the sometimes deadly free radical particles.
Many health care practitioners see the wisdom in daily intake of plenty of fruits and vegetables in a variety of colors. Some recommend daily: Intake of 1 quart (1.1 litre) purified water a day PLUS 1 quart (1.1 litre) fresh fruit or vegetable juice.
With juicing one can consume many more enzymes and natural antioxidants than a person normally would in a "good diet". Your body is composed of billions of microscopic cells and your every existence depends on these cells. They need live nourishment and this can be supplied very well in the form of juicing.
There are many juicers now available and you can achieve benefit from any of them. We like the newer, time-saving models that allow the user to place WHOLE fruits and vegetables in the unit and delicious, fresh juice emerges in a matter of seconds.
The more color and variety of produce, the more natural antioxidants one can consume. Carotenoids and flavonoids found in these fruits and vegetables can contribute to a very large extent to our program of antiaging. Why? Because these natural chemical compounds slow or halt oxidative processes that may prevent or deter the onset of many diseases associated with aging, including heart disease, prostate cancer, diabetes, wrinkles and sun damage and much more.
By adding concentrated berry extracts, one has even more natural antioxidant tools. Once again, eating fresh is great. However, some companies now offer concentrated extracts of berries like elderberries, blueberries, cranberries, and bilberries for 10-15 times the amount of antioxidants as can be found in the fruit alone.
Researchers at the USDA Human Nutrition Center have found that blueberries rank number 1 in antioxidant activity when compared to 40 other fresh fruits and vegetables.
Anthycyanin - the pigment that makes blueberries blue - is thought to be responsible for this major health benefit. Blueberries also contain beta-carotene, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, ellagic acid and phenolics that can also act as antioxidants. Other health benefits one can expect form blueberries are:
Support cognitive function, concentration and memory
Maintain eye and retina health
Promote urinary tract health
Support healthy glucose metabolism
Not just for urinary tract health, cranberry extracts are provide potent antioxidants that protect and detoxify. Combining cranberry with the therapeutically beneficial elderberry and lo han fruits results in a delicious herbal supplement that helps to maintain urinary tract health, promotes cardiovascular health, cellular health and even dental health. Because of its detoxifying properties, it increases your energy levels and improves mood.
If you cannot source concentrated berry extracts, here are some wild-crafted brands:

Pomegranates too have been used for thousands of years by Mediterranean peoples. And pomegranates have recently been promoted for their beautiful skin-enhancing properties. Pomegranates contain polyphenols, tannins, ellagic acid and anthocyanins. These compounds are believed to fight disease and pomegranates can also:
Support healthy blood pressure levels
Help maintain healthy blood vessels
Reduce the oxidation of LDL cholesterol
Support oral health
Support skin health
Green, black and white teas have been studied for their antioxidant powers too. Many research organizations have demonstrated that the polyphenols, detected in these teas, help to support a healthy heart and cardiovascular system and are recommended for smokers, the obese and those under stress and duress, though anyone could benefit from their consumption. Some vitamins are considered antioxidants such as vitamins E and C. As are the carotenoids (such as beta-carotene); selenium; and flavonoids (anthocyanidins, polyphenols, quercetin, glutathione, alpha-lipoic acid, and coenzyme Q10. Vitamin E is the body's principal fat-soluble antioxidant vitamin and protects fatty cell components from free-radical oxidation. It works well in conjunction with selenium and vitamin C.
As an antioxidant, vitamin E protects DNA and other cell structures from damage. It also protects LDL cholesterol from oxidation which would otherwise trigger an early step in the development of cardiovascular disease. There are other antioxidants so to verify a wide spectrum of protection, eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables and consider a daily intake of a plant-based green "superfood" formula. Preferably one that contains foods from the allium family (onions, garlic, chives) and sprouts.
Sprouts from vegetables and legumes are extremely health-enhancing and often contain a concentrated form of antioxidant protection not found in the food alone. Broccoli sprouts, especially have been noted to provide more protection than just eating the cruciferous vegetables by themselves. Which is very important for immune enhancement and cancer prevention.
