New! Allison Bates
Review: Princess Debut for the Nintendo DS
May 15th, 2009

I know that Princess Debut for the Nintendo DS is a really stupid video game, and not a very well made one at that, but I still love playing it. You spend the game pretending to be an indistinct big-eyed anime girl who wanders her kingdom, getting hit on by rainbow haired princes and going to balls. There’s not a lot more to the game than that. You’re never in any peril, the world never needs to be saved, and, of course, you always look totally cute. If this sounds like the sort of game that would make you gouge your eyes out, it probably is. If you want a cute, stress-free and ridiculously girly game to kill some time, however, Princess Debut is not that bad.
For me, the best part of Princess Debut is wandering around and talking to all of the carefully stereotyped princes. It isn’t as if the game presents a realistic picture of interpersonal communications. Judging by the way the princes dote on your character, none of them are allowed any contact with any other female. They aren’t even that interesting or well drawn. Each of the princes has a different standard personality, from the sensitive boy with a dead family member to the egotistical sleazeball, and a few of them seem to have slightly crooked faces. What I do appreciate, however, is the myriad of methods with which you can crush each of their hearts. Despite the superficiality of the game’s concept, the dialogue is well written enough that it’s possible to get some sort of sick pleasure out of telling the fifth prince to confess his love to you in ten minutes that you’re just not that thrilled with being touched.
The half of Princess Debut that doesn’t revolve around chatting with generic princes is about ballroom dancing, and I’m pretty ambivalent towards it. You select a fairly laid back classical piece to dance to, trace your stylus in pre-determined patterns along the bottom screen of your DS, and rack up a ridiculous amount of points. It never gets very difficult, and I’ve actually made use of the game’s dancing only mode when I’ve had trouble sleeping. What the game’s dancing does offer, however, is a lot of stuff to unlock. I don’t have any grand attachment to the game play of the dancing itself, but by God, it was important to me that I unlock every dress in the princess’s closet.
As you might be able to tell, I can’t think of that many nice things to say about Princess Debut. The story is brain-dead, it’s a bit too easy, and the artwork is uneven. Despite that, I still thought it was self-aware and addictive enough to be worth playing. If you’re a little girl who really thinks that dancing princesses are nifty or an adult nerdy enough to be impressed by the fact that the game has magical girl transformation sequences, you might like Princess Debut. Otherwise, I don’t even recommend that you touch the box it comes in.
